Vegan Chicken Stir-Fry Recipe with TVP

  1. Soak 2 cups TVP slices or chunks in 3 cups lightly salted boiling water. For about 5 minutes. I added 1/2 teaspoon turmeric to the water for kicks. 

  2. Drain and squeeze water out of the TVP.

  3. Stir fry onions on high for 3 minutes then add TVP, reduce to medium heat and stir for about 5 minutes.

  4. Add a couple of tablespoons minced ginger and 5 cloves minced garlic and fry another 3 minutes. Add a few spoons water if the TVP is sticking but not too much water.

  5. Dilute 2 tablespoons Madras curry paste in water or coconut milk and add to the pan - (I used Humani-T's own locally made curry paste) Stir well and add 1-2 teaspoons lemon juice, stir again and turn off heat.

You can eat this dish as is, or use it as a base for other dishes. It would taste great in a tomato sauce or vegan butter chicken sauce poured over it and served with Basmati rice and the coconut salad below.

Don’t have time to make a salad? Eat it with a couple of tablespoons of Humani-T’s own in-house sweet & mildly spicy Mango Chutney and Naan bread!

Delicious Sri Lankan Coconut Salad (Pol Sambol)

This mouth watering, spicy salad is super easy and fast to make. It is usually made with freshly grated coconut, but you can make a very good version with unsweetened desiccated coconut.

We have always wanted to be part of the Halifax Burger Week. It’s such a great initiative, and, it’s also so delicious with so many great local establishments around the city creating so many great burgers.

This year, we decided to get involved, but not in the traditional way. We’ve created a dessert burger — specifically a gelato burger!

DIY gelato sandwich kits

There is nothing quite like the old-fashioned pairing of fresh cookies and fresh gelato. Ice cream sandwiches have long been a favourite for many families. They bring people together. But how much more special would the experience be if you were to make them fresh and customize them rather than buying a store-bought, pre-packaged ice cream sammy?

Let us sort this out for you. We offer DIY gelato sandwich kits, which you can pre-order here and pick up at our north end location. Kit includes:

  • 8 cookies from our bakery

  • 2 pints of gelato

Just what is gelato?

Gelato, fro-yo, ice cream, soft-serve — all descendants of the same delicious cold dessert family. But you may wonder: What’s so different about gelato, and why should I choose gelato over ice cream?

“Gelato is typically hand-made in small batches”

Yes, that’s true, but that’s now what necessarily sets it apart. Some ice cream can be made in small batches too; while gelato is sometimes mass-produced.

What makes gelato different is the way it’s made. Gelato is typically made without cream, or with about 70% less cream than ice cream. That means it has much less fat, and much more flavour.

We take this one step further:

  • In many of our flavours, we omit animal products altogether. No milk, no cream. 50% of our gelato are vegan, made with dairy-free milk or water.

  • We do not purchase any flavour packs, and make everything ourselves. We blend in over 1 kilogram of fruit into each fruity flavour, roast our own pistachios (that’s why our pistachio gelato isn’t neon green), and draw our own espresso shots for coffee flavoured gelato. If a cake needs to be layered into the gelato, we make the cake ourselves in our bakery! The list goes on. We control everything, to ensure you get the best tasting product.

More per scoop

You’ll notice that gelato is typically more expensive than ice cream. There is a reason for this, beyond the quality. Gelato has less air whipped into it than ice cream, meaning you get almost double per scoop! Better quality, better flavour, and more to enjoy! Everyone wins.

Antoinette makes her vegan cheesecakes with a in-house vegan cream cheese she makes with soya, coconut oil, dairy-free cream, and flaxseed. We crushed the cake and layered it into our vegan Fior di Panna gelato made with coconut milk.

An update on Humani-T South Park

We haven’t been able to re-open our South Park location yet, but it’s closed only temporarily. We are currently spread thin for resources, and the ongoing construction from the crane disaster has been hard on us. We’re hoping to reopen soon, and will provide an update as soon as we have it.

For now, our north end location is open Monday - Saturday until 6pm. We are aiming to extend our hours within the next couple weeks.
